Question answered:04/12/07 Warning! this question is over two years old.

We found no specific information stating that antimalarials are contraindicated (or indeed safe) in patients with Gilbert’s syndrome.

We looked at the SPCs for Mefloquine [1], Proguanil [2] and Chloroquine [3] and neither mentioned Gilbert’s syndrome.  To see the specific sections on contraindications follow these links:

Mefloquine http://emc.medicines.org.uk/emc/assets/c/html/displaydoc.asp?documentid=1701#CONTRAINDICATIONS

Proguanil http://emc.medicines.org.uk/emc/assets/c/html/displaydoc.asp?documentid=756#CONTRAINDICATIONS

Chloroquine http://emc.medicines.org.uk/emc/assets/c/html/displaydoc.asp?documentid=2272#CONTRAINDICATIONS
