Question answered:19/06/06 Warning! this question is over two years old.
Prodigy Guidance (1) on Osteoarthritis has a section entitled “What are the risk factors for developing osteoarthritis?” which states
“Trauma - intra-articular fracture is accepted as a cause of OA, but there is a lack of good evidence to support this. Also joint injury leading to instability e.g. cruciate ligament tear in the knee and lateral ligament to the ankle can lead to premature OA”
An emedicine article (2) Osteoarthritis, lists trauma as one of the risk factors under the section for causes.
A further emedicine article (3) Knee Injury, Soft Tissue has the following
Failure to properly diagnose or adequately treat a meniscal tear may result in chronic osteoarthritis in the knee joint. Geriatric cases - Because of underlying degenerative disease, meniscal tears may emerge in older patients with a history of minimal or no trauma. For example, simply rising from a squatting position may cause a tear.
GP Notebook, an online medical textbook (4) on Osteoarthritis states
“Secondary osteoarthritis may follow a variety of conditions such as ligament or meniscus injury, recurrent patella dislocation, osteochondritis dissecans, joint infection or other insult”.
And further on more specifically (5) for Osteoarthritis of the Hip:
“Osteoarthritis of the hip may be primary, where no underlying cause is discovered, or secondary. It may develop in a relatively young adult as the sequel to congenital subluxation, coxa vara - a complication of slipped femoral epiphysis - acetabular deformity or trauma”.
