Question answered:06/07/07 Warning! this question is over two years old.
Symptom-led questions are frequently very difficult for the Q&A service to answer as most of the literature is written-up according to the condition. To help answer this question we sought the help of the NLH’s specialist library for skin disorders (http://www.library.nhs.uk/skin/).
One issue they raised was whether it was actually depigmentation, as opposed to lightening (hypopigmentation).
The clinical lead reported “Top on my list would be oral lichen planus which can leave hypo, hyper and depigmentation. Then lupus erythematosus.”
Given the problems associated with symptom-led questions, coupled to the potential ambiguity between depigmentation and hypopigmentation we strongly recommend you seek input from a local dermatologist.
