Question answered:20/03/08

We found no specific advice commenting on the acceptability of lymecycline in place of penicillin in asplenia patients.

ATTRACT (the Welsh equivalent of the NLH Q&A Service) answered a related question in 2003.  This included a table of alternates to penicillin.

To answer your question requires expert input and we can suggest two places:

1) The Centre for Infections (based at the Health Protection Agency) has an on-call doctor who should be able to advise, their number is 020 8200 4400
2) A specialist medicines information unit.

In the case of a local specialist medicines unit, we can forward your question to your local centre.  If you would like us to do so, can you let us know via ‘Contact us’ (http://www.clinicalanswers.nhs.uk/index.cfm?action=contact)
