Question answered:21/05/08
According to the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare:
"The United Kingdom Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use (UKMEC) does not refer specifically to primary biliary cirrhosis but recommends that for women with mild (compensated) cirrhosis, the benefits of using the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) outweigh the risks (UKMEC 2); and for women with severe (decompensated) cirrhosis, the risks of using the LNG-IUS outweigh the benefits (UKMEC 3).
The CEU recommend that women with PBC should be advised of the risks of using a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device if they develop severe (decompensated) cirrhosis. Consideration should be given to the use of non-hormonal methods of contraception."
