Question answered:06/02/08 Warning! this question is over two years old.
The 2002 guidelines published by the British Committee for Standards in Haematology [1] advocates lifelong antibiotics.
We spoke to the duty doctor at the Centre for Infections (part of the Health Protection Agency) and they stated that the most important issue was ensuring that vaccinations (pneumococcal and influenza) were up to date.
With regard to antibiotics they said the decision was a clinical one as there are pros and cons for prescribing antibiotics, especially given her age. If you were to use an antibiotic they generally recommend, given the penicillin allergy, a cephalosporin. However, we recommend you discuss this with a local microbiologist.
